New York City kicked off its first annual NYC Jewelry Week (NYCJW) on Monday. Jewelers, bauble brands, artists, and aspiring designers all converged on the city for the week long event. It’s the city’s first and only week dedicated to promoting the world of jewelry through various events around town—including educational talks, exhibitions, interactive workshops, salons, and collaborations.
Mother of New York Fashion Week, Fern Mallis, was part of the committee that curated the creation of the week, along with industry darlings JB Jones, Bella Neyman, and Anya Firestone. Mallis participated in a series called Made in New York Talks at the Fashion Institute of Technology, which explored how a statement piece can tell a story or be part of the development of a film or theater character. Other notable events included a “Show-and-Tell” with Fred Leighton at the Madison Avenue store, an Antonio Pineda exhibition at the Carlyle Hotel, and Documenting the Nameplate—a talk at the NYCJW Headquarters at Artists and Fleas SoHo.
While it’s still unknown whether NYCJW will take on the same fever of New York Fashion Week or the Coterie exposition, artists and jewelers alike are excited for the opportunity to showcase their industry, independent of any umbrella event.
“We want people to walk away from this week with a greater understanding of how jewelry is made, where it is made, and who makes it. Furthermore, we are providing the public with the tools, by way of the exclusive programming, to become educated consumers and patrons,” Neyman told WWD.
New York City Jewelry week runs from November 12-18 and takes place at various locations throughout the city. For a full listing of events and locations check out the official NYCJW website.
