Shiny suits and satin draping abound, the ‘90s are back for Versace’s Pre-Fall 2019. Donatella must have flipped through the brand’s archives for inspiration, incorporating the baroque prints we’ve come to associate with Versace, the crushed patent leather that the entire Bad Boy label donned through that decade, and the sexy less is more concept that skyrocketed designers like Gianna Versace and Tom Ford to fashion acclaim.
Though steeped in elements that make the 35 and over crowd swoon with nostalgia, the collection is little more than simple design pulled together by interesting patterns. Solid colored looks like black plunging mini and maxi-dresses with gold pin side accents don’t quite fit in, while black tuxedo womenswear jackets—though quite sharp in their own right—are staples that appear on the runway time and time again, offering little innovation to the collection. And cornrows on black models were out of place with the rest of the beauty theme, which flipped flop between poofy 80s updos and slicked back tresses paired with clean faces and emphasized eyes.
If I had to give this collection a grade it would get a B. It’s not the most innovative and avant garde ensemble of looks, but that hasn’t been the Versace target since J.Lo’s plunging barely there scarf dress from the 2000 Grammy Awards. This collection connects the iGen consumer with a piece of time when the brand was a go to for rappers, actors, and celebrities alike. With streetwear as the new high fashion for many influencers, brands like Versace are digging in their crates to bring back iconic looks that align them with that trend. The collection’s most notably throwback looks elevated it, offering a little something for an array of modern consumers, as well as marketing to the consumer that appreciates the nod back to when they were what millennials are to the retail market today.
Standouts from the collection include furry zebra print slides with Versace gold insignia, a gold, black, and white classic Versace print power suit, a black quilted jacket reminiscent of the ones worn by Naughty by Nature in the O.P.P video, and a colorful heart print pantsuit with exaggerated shoulders.
