Why Monét X Change Won’t Win All Stars 4

Ladies (and gentlemen), the library is officially open. Midtown is burning, and so is the stage at “Rupaul’s Drag Race All Stars” season 4. The competition ensues as normal, replete with shady queens, comedy queens, and drama queens. It’s unclear who will take it, though some queens are beginning to stand out as the best a their craft. But one competitor is on a sloth’s pace of an ascend in her stardom: Monét X Change. We want to root for her, but there may be too many stops between where she currently is in the race, and that beloved title and crown. Let’s take a look at the line up she’s up against:

Latrice Royale and Manila Luzon are the OGs. You’re okay if they don’t win. You likely don’t think that they will. But you’re perfectly happy watching them bring that extra fun to the game every week. Valentina is the nicest to look at. Now that Gia is gone, she’s serving up the fishiest looks — eyebrows be damned. Trinity the Tuck is that queen with all the ‘tude who serves up bawdy awdy, and has the tuck that can be heard across the world. Yes I said heard. Those testicles must be screaming under all those bodysuits.

Monique Heart is the commentary queen. We love the combination of her mediocre performances outshined by her side quips. (“And then y’all should go to commercial right there”). Naomi Smalls is like you’re goofy little sister. You love and adore her and she’s not a threat because you know that if you need to, you could just beat her up. I think she’s exactly the same age as she was on her season.

And then there’s Monét X Change. Auntie drag. And that’s not a read. I’m here for it. But what I’m not here for are those unlaid wigs, outdated shoes, and irrelevant outfits. I wanted Monét to win her season. She was my darling. I tried to stand by her side with those pussycat wigs. I was delighted when she semi-retired them as she stepped into her All Stars era. Much to my dismay they were only to be replaced with costume-like, seemingly synthetic, stiff numbers that don’t always seem to make sense. And even when she gets a look right, she throws it off with oddball accents.

On episode three she served up a scrumptious fit on the ‘Boots the House Down’ runway. Unfortunately she chose to top it off with an oversized nose ring that didn’t add anything to the look. Despite a minor fall in that episode’s Snatch Game, she is still poised to take the major challenges with her quick wit, polished acting and dancing skills, and her lip sync assassin toolkit. But Monét’s style is elevating at a pace that she cannot afford in a competition filled with queens that serve lewks from week to week. Her hits are inconsistent during the competition and it’s a shame because outside of the show we’ve seen her slay. While I don’t always agree with the judges, this is one point where we see eye to eye.

Fortunately a win is not completely off the table though. Even Jinx Monsoon and Alaska, two campy queens with questionable looks, both took home a crown. They took those critiques, and stepped their pussies up to leave no doubts in the minds of the judges, that they were winners. As the competition winds down it will only get harder. If Monét stands a chance at being crowned the winner of this season of “All Stars,” her rolling rack will need a serious, and fast, glow up. Now sashay away!
